Sydney Metro – Australia

EnduroShield has been applied to Australia’s first fully automated rapid rail transit system. Sydney Metro is Australia’s largest public transport infrastructure project. The AUD8.3 billion (USD5.8 billion) high frequency, fully automated rapid transit system opened in May 2019 and currently consists of a single line with 13 stations and 22 mi (36 km) of track. EnduroShield was specified and applied to the glass roofs of key above ground stations help keep the glass cleaner between cleans. The permanent* coating will also help protect the glass against the deteriorating effect of brake dust, pollution, and weather, whilst making cleaning and maintenance simpler.

64,583 sq ft (6000 sqm) of glass canopy across the above ground stations have been treated with EnduroShield. The team worked with Empire Facades on the specifications for treating the futuristic style, multi-faceted glass roofing designed by international urban architects Hassell Studio. The coating was applied in-factory and the glass panels were then delivered to site and lifted into place.

More than 20 years since the initial proposal was raised, Sydney is the first Australian city to realise a fully automated metro system. In the first month of operation more than 1.8 million journeys have been completed on the Northwest line, with a projected daily ridership of 78,000. A 30 kilometre extension of the metro railway is due to open in 2024. With facility managers looking towards innovative solutions to reduce maintenance, EnduroShield continues to be specified on major transport and infrastructure projects.
